Beat the Winter Blues

It's February and winter seems like it's no where near ending. There's minimal sunlight, colder weather and snow on the ground. Don't let that stop you from being active! There are many fun and challenging activities you can do during the winter months to keep you motivated and fit.  Try these exercises to get you moving again!


1. Boxing: Traditionally boxing was only seen for males who were competing. These days it's used by both males and females of all fitness levels. Head to the gym, or purchase a bag for yourself to hang in the basement (~$75) and start punching. Not only is this a great way to elevate the heart rate and burn fat, it also acts as a great stress release for those needing it!

2. Snowshoeing: Although we haven't had much snow in the local GTA area, there are numerous trails north of the city that are ready for action with snowshoes. This is not only a great workout for your muscles, but you will find it challenging cardiovascular-wise as well. The deeper the snow, the harder the legs work. The faster the pace, the more elevated the heart rate. Try it out and see for yourself!

3. Skating: Weather you're skating indoors or outdoors there are numerous arenas to use during the winter. This is also a great activity to do with your family. Make it an event with hot tea for yourself afterwards, and hot chocolate for the kids. Skating is great for all fitness levels as you can chose your pace and hang on to the boards should you need to!

 

With the Olympics taking place right now you should feel some encouragement and motivation to stay moving. Our athletes train hard for hours every day. We should be able to work in a few hours a week and stay moving. You know you'll feel better for it at the end of the day. So stop making excuses and give it a try!
